Player ratings: Kimmich and Ribéry stand out in wasteful loss to Real Madrid

In Bayern’s wasteful team performance against Real Madrid, Joshua Kimmich and Franck Ribéry were the least terrible.

Bayern had a wasteful, average game against Real Madrid. Most players will need to pull their socks up if Bayern are to progress through to the final. Injuries did not help either as both Arjen Robben and Jérôme Boateng went off early in the fixture. The only stand out performers were Franck Ribéry and Joshua Kimmich, who scored the only goal for Bayern.

Excellent

Joshua Kimmich

An amazing first half for Kimmich scoring a sublime goal he created for himself after running from his own goal. This basically sums up what a player he is nothing short of a work horse. Played almost a perfect match both in offense and defence. He created 3 wonderful chances with 2 interceptions and a tackle.

Great

Franck Ribéry

Although he fluffed many chances on goal, he kept trying throughout the evening. He gave Real’s defenders a very challenging night. He had 3 great shots on goal but all were directed straight at Keylor Navas and lacked that final prowess. Ribéry like the others will need to work on finishing if Bayern is to get a good result from the away fixture.

Mats Hummels

Hummels did an amazing job in positioning himself correctly, often derailing the numerous chances Real were trying to create. He was good throughout the match and was at no fault for the goals that were scored.

James Rodriguez

As soon as the whistle went, James Rodriguez was already fighting. Forcing an error out of Carvajal that almost led to goal. He was very good at capitalising from dead ball situations. He also provided great chances to the attackers from free kicks. He created 4 chances and even got involved in defending, making 3 tackles and dipping back.

Good

Sven Ulreich

The goalkeeper was not really questioned in the first half. The first chance that came to him was impossible to save and led to Madrid’s first goal by Marcelo. The second goal was also not one he could have done much about as his defence basically let him down.

Average

Rafinha

The little Brazilian fought valiantly in the first half keeping the left-hand side quiet. An early second half giveaway led to an easy 2v2 situation for Real Madrid on the counter that cost Bayern a goal. Rafinha needed to be more alert and faster.

Robert Lewandowski

As play progressed, he sadly messed up a lot of chances to score.  This is very uncharacteristic of Robert Lewandowski who has enjoyed scoring against Real Madrid in the past. He was much quieter than usual tonight. Disappointing.

Thomas Müller

He was hardly involved in the play. He had little effect on the game and fumbled on a chance directly in front of goal. It was a really troubling theme of the missed chances and Müller was a big part of that tonight.

Javi Martínez

He tried and for the most kept the Madrid midfielders at bay. Other than that, he was not involved in the match much. He will be expected to display a more dominating performance in the next leg of this fixture.

Niklas Süle

He was not troubled a lot but used his physicality well when he was called upon. It will be good experience for him has he will likely be called upon for the next fixture.

Bad

Thiago Alcântara

He was introduced to replace Arjen Robben. He was not up to speed with the play at first, and his passing was poor. This progressed thoughout the team as he went ghost the same way he did last year in this fixture. He needs to push more especially with James Rodriguez taking what was his spot in the team.
